Sarah and Ian's Move to Ottawa

The story so far...having planned and booked a three month trip to South America, we were given a difficult decision to make when Ian was offered a job in Canada. After much hard thinking, we took the job, but get the best of both worlds as we still have two weeks in Brazil and Chile before arriving in Ottawa. We are now living in Ottawa and enjoying the big adventure of living somewhere new. This is the story of our experience...

Longer Note

Sarah had Friday off work and made me take Friday off as well so we thought we had better make the most of it. We drove down to Sarah’s aunt and uncle in Kingston on Thursday and had an enjoyable evening catching up and nibbling on goodies. Early Friday morning we continued on our journey to Toronto, where we stopped at the Ontario Science Museum. The controversial BodyWorks exhibit was on show so we paid our $25 each to walk round and stare at naked, dead bodies in grotesque poses. It was quite informative and we weren’t squeamish at all. The plactication process used on the bodies made them look like models, which my mind found a lot easier to deal with. The rest of the centre was a bit of a disappointment and is need of some major updating. There were a few interesting and interactive displays but most of it was rubbish. After leaving in good time to get to Niagara on the Lake we found ourselves sitting on a Toronto motorway for most of the afternoon. Not the best start to the weekend.

Things picked up when we eventually arrived at our B&B. We would really recommend this one – Besides the Winery B&B. The room was beautiful, the hosts really friendly and it was very reasonably priced. After dropping our bags we raced to a nearby factory outlet (it’s the biggest tourist attraction in the area we had been told) and spent an hour or so walking around. Finally we thought we had better pop in and look at the Falls, which were nicely illuminated in the evening and had a firework show too. Bonus.

Saturday was a glorious day. We started off at the Falls. We made sure we had views alongside it, above it and below it. The Skylon Tower had good views of the Falls and the Beneath the Falls walk gave us an up close and wet perspective. The queue to get a ticket for the walk below was horrific so it must be really bad in the summer. We were disappointed by the development of the town. It has become extremely tacky since we last visited it (I was there nearly 15 years ago and Sarah about 8 years ago). We felt bad that we made 3 sets of visitors go to stay there – sorry. The town of Niagara on the Lake was much quainter and not nearly as developed and we enjoyed our stroll up and down the high street. Our final stop of the day was at the Hillebrand Vineyard. We had an ice wine seminar and really enjoyed learning about how it is made and particularly enjoyed the tastings!

We had another good breakfast at the B&B and set off early as we had a 6 hour drive back to Ottawa.

Quick Note

Following complaints that previous blog entries have been too long we will endeavour to curtail this one. We had a lovely weekend in Niagara on the Lake.
